Summer Vacation

We decided to take our summer vacation in Shell Beach, 3 hours up the coast in Central California.  The last time we were there was 2 years ago when I had just announced the pregnancy and our whole family went up together to celebrate.  How much life has changed!

We drove up at night hoping that Delaney would sleep the whole time, and this was a successful gamble.  The resort is gorgeous-- on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean, residence style accomodations, an unbelievable restaurant, a fantastic saltwater pool, etc.  It was so luxurious!  We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite so Delaney had her own room, we had a full kitchen laundry (which we ended up using almost every day!), living room, dining room.  We were able to really relax and get comfortable.  We had a spectacular view of the ocean and heard the waves crashing all night.

We explored parks and playgrounds all around Shell Beach, Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo.  Delaney loved trying all new kinds of equipment.

We went to the Children's Museum in San Luis Obispo which was really cute.  It had a whole miniature town.  Delaney loved being the conductor on the train.  We also went to the Sea Life Center in Avila Beach and Delaney got to see all kinds of fish, jellyfish and sharks.

We went to the Avila Barn, where the pumpkin patch has just started to grow.  There were tons of animals there that Delaney got to feed.

Delaney loves the water and the ocean.  She is a little too fearless for our comfort and would be halfway across the Pacific by now if we hadn't held onto her tightly.  She would giggle when the waves would come and hit her feet.  She loved the miles of sand.  She also loved the pool and having us take turns throwing her into the air.  Unfortunately she had a runny nose and the air was really cool, so we limited a lot of the pool and beach time.

We went on many exploratory walks around the area.

Delaney received a giant lamb pillow from Brooks and Bonnie ("Amby") which she carried around with her around the hotel and insisted on taking on several excursions (of course she chooses the largest possible toy to form an attachment to!)

Brooks and Bonnie took her on a shopping spree, and she was wiped out after (on Amby, of course).

A shopping spree and shoe fetish?  We are in trouble!

She made a few friends (but kept her distance).

Delaney is quite the little gourmet!  No kids menu for this one.  She enjoyed scallops, risotto, salmon, couscous, crabcakes, fish tacos... That being said, she also ate an outrageous amount of french fries.  Guess it was vacation for everyone!

The best part of the vacation was spending so much quality time with Brooks and Bonnie.  Delaney had so much fun with them going out for meals, going for walks, having a sleepover, playing with the puppies, and just hanging out.  They left on Sunday morning (we stayed through until Tuesday afternoon) and she demanded "MORE!" after they left and searched the rooms for them the next morning.  We also got to go on jogs on our own and have a date night.  It was fantastic!

Delaney definitely has Grandpa wrapped around her finger.

Another special treat was having Saemi come out for an afternoon and evening.  Delaney put on quite a show for her and they could not stop entertaining each other.

A few things we learned on this trip....

- Traveling with Delaney is SO much easier now that she takes 1 nap a day, can eat meals at any restaurant, and is drinking whole milk and water.  When we went to Hawaii a year ago she was taking 3 naps a day (and was not good a napping on the go), not eating solid food. still breastfeeding, not able to move on her own.
- Traveling with family is fantastic.  We enjoyed our time together, we enjoyed our time alone, Delaney enjoyed her time on adventures with Grandpa and Grandma, and they enjoyed their alone time with Delaney.  Win win win!
- Vacation was a great opportunity for Delaney to try new foods.  I'm so glad that we branched out and found so many more things that she enjoys to eat.
- At least for the near future, we will be sticking to vacations that are nearby.  It was so great to just hop in car, load up everything, take Dakota too, drive 3 hours and be there.  We didn't have to worry about a long flight, time change, fitting everything in a suitcase, etc.

It was an incredible and unforgettable vacation.  Although Brice and I have travelled around the world together and gone on some extraordinary trips, this one topped them all.  "It's who you are with, not where you are, that matters!"
